George Whitfield was born circa 1808 in Belfast Ireland and migrated to Australia in february 1834. He went into partnership with John Samuel Lambard but by October 1834 was trading by himself. He was very involved in the sport of pigeon shooting and by the 1860s his establishment was the largest in Australia. On the evening of November 4th 1864 at about 6:30pm while talking to two friends outside his shop he was murdered by patrick McGlynn, a former employee who had been dismissed after a disagreement about four years earlier. McGlynn walked up to him and shot him through the temple with a six shot revolver. After his death the business was taken over by his nephew William John Whitfield who sold it circa 1866.
